Phanfare Blog: Twitter and Facebook status messages have diverged

Without any doubt but isn’t the point (getting deep) about trying to find meaning in the social noise rather than in the social network? And - more to the point - isn’t this ultimately what technology should be doing for us: simplifying, making easier, improving our online status a need rather than obfuscating? Twitter will be the next big thing to happen soon if not already

I am going to agree with you on this one. The only facebook status updates that are really interesting are the ones from people know and care about.

But even still, I am 10 times as addicted to my facebook status updates (coming from just over 400 friends) than I am my Twitter account (I have over 2250 followers @writing_prompts).

Maybe I am a little overboard, but my brothers and I started a facebook app that turns your facebook status updates into t-shirts. We just thought some facebook status updates are so funny they should be on a t-shirt. The app is called Status King. I think we are on to something, it is growing quite well.

great observation. it's so true. twitter is moving from status to news while FB is still largely status

We're seeing phenomenal growth in the number of followers in our SocialMedia411 Twitter account (www.twitter.com/socialmedia411) precisely because we point our followers to those "news" items we feel will stimulate thought on our user's part.

We try to keep the number of tweets to about a half-dozen per day so we don't pollute their streams - and we get compliments daily on what our followers are calling "our service".

I agree that as Twitter evolves, the concept of "status" at Twitter vs Facebook is diverging rapidly. IMO this divergence reflects the fundamental difference in the two platforms; At it's core Facebook is about placemarking the details of one's life - Twitter on the other hand is more about the real-time consumption and discussion of information & ideas.

The stream is a dream :)

This divergence makes things like the twitter app for facebook feel all wrong (it makes your tweets your facebook status). If you are using twitter to point people to news articles, talk about the world, thrift savings plan inform about your business, etc, it feels way too commercial to have every tweet become your facebook status!
